Starting your own blog can be a daunting task. I am going to walk you through how to set up a blog in a matter of just a couple of hours & I promise, it won’t be as tough as you think!
There’s a small list of things you want to think about when you first start thinking about your blog. These range from your website name to who is going to host your blog and what you want to write about. Let’s break it down:
Website Name- Choosing your site name is HUGE! Go with something that fits your niche and what you want to write about. I do suggest a .com extension. SiteGround will allow you to check to see if your desired domain is available and I strongly suggest checking that first.
Blog Content- There are tons of things to write about on a blog! You just have to find what your passion is and run with it. For me, I love the idea from working in my jammies (hence the name of this blog and site lol). Here are just a few subjects that you can write your blog about:
- Health and Wellness
- Direct Sales
- Mommy Blogging
- Daddy Blogging
- Essential Oils
As you can see, this list only scratches the surface. There are so many other options to look at. If you’re looking at this list and thinking, “Rob, these are all majorly saturated subjects and my blog will get buried.” Don’t despair. You will probably have a unique perspective to bring on the subject so don’t let that stop you.
Hosting-This is the next thing you want to think about when setting up your blog. Basically, this means, what company are you going to go with to maintain your blog on the ever-expanding internet? Personally, I use SiteGround and I love them! They are very cheap and the customer service is OUTSTANDING! The few times I’ve used the online chat feature have been amazing.
If you’re just starting out with a blog like I was when I first started my business, you want to go with their basic StartUp plan.
It’s only $3.95 per month and they often have deals. When I started my business website I got in on a Black Friday deal and got mine for $2.95 per month. Talk about savings! You can add the security for an extra $1-2 a month which I recommend so in the end, your new setup will only cost you about $59.40-71.40 for your first year. Well under $100.00! WordPress-This is the system many bloggers use to set up their sites. You will want to use WordPress installer, pictured below
Themes-Wordpress has many themes to choose from and many of them are free. I personally use the Freelancer theme because it’s clean and very customizable for my needs but there are so many to choose from and picking your theme can be so much fun! Don’t get too caught up in it right away and if you publish your site or blog and the theme isn’t working for you, simply log in and change it.
Once you get through these steps you’re ready to start blogging. Congrats, you’re ready to take a huge step in working from home!
